Pulsing through the whole of nature and animating each and every one of your cells is a divine, luminous energy. We see it in nature all of the time- the glow from the sun, the bloom of a flower, the rising of the grass. This same energy is also in each one of us. In yoga, we call this force prana. This life force shines out through us according to our particular makeup, through our circumstances, through our programming, through everything that makes us who we are. Yoga uses breath, postures, and meditation to guide this life force throughout the body.
We can also use a more common word like “charge” to describe this force. We know what it feels like to be all “charged up”- where you feel excited, angry, or scared. You might feel this charge as heat in the body or as a tightening in the throat or gut. We’ve also experienced what it feels like to have no charge, to feel like you’ve run out of gas. You might feel depleted and find it hard to get anything done. Your body feels sluggish, cold.
In our nine week focus class, we’ll be discovering how to manage this charge, not by repressing it, but by fully harvesting it into our tissues and into the subtle channels of the body. We’ll explore how charge can become bound in our muscles and tissues. Too much charge can leave us feeling angry or anxious, like we’re wound up too tightly. We’ll also explore what happens if we become under-bound, where we feel aimless and loose, lazy and lethargic. Our goal is to learn some strategies, through yoga, that will help us feel more balanced.
